CALLUM

I'm ensconced in the back of my limo, the smooth leather against my back and the hush of the engine transporting us through the city. Streetlights paint fleeting shadows across Pearl's face, and I can't help but be mesmerized by the way they play on her features—highlighting her determination, her resilience, her beauty.

I sigh, the sound almost lost in the purr of motion. "You know, wealth and prestige are supposed to solve all problems," I begin, the confession tumbling from my lips with unexpected ease in the cocoon of comfort my limo provides. "But even with all the success, I find myself surrounded by a lot of people and yet..." I trail off, hesitating to strip away that last layer of armor, but it's Pearl here with me, and something about her demands truth. "...still very alone."

Pearl turns her head to me, her eyes wide and shimmering with a compassion that feels underserved. "I never would've guessed," she says softly. "You, a billionaire, feeling lonely? You must have tons of people around you.”

"Yeah," I admit, and the sheer enormity of that admission wraps around my heart like ivy. "I've always struggled with finding someone who sees me, not my money or my status."

She reaches out, her hand hovering for just a moment before it settles over mine—a comforting weight. "I might not understand exactly what that feels like," she shares, "but when I got sick, it was like people could only see the disease. Not me, just the girl with the brain tumor."

I look at our entwined hands; her fingers are warm, her touch grounding. The texture of her skin against mine sets off a tremor of need deep within. She's had her own battles—no, wars—to fight. The memory of her on that stage, vulnerable yet unyielding, surges forth. "How are you now?" I ask, the impetus to know more about her gnawing at me.

Her smile wavers, wistful and a touch prideful. "I'm okay. I had to see so many doctors. The first said I wouldn't make it." Her voice breaks, just slightly, but she clears her throat, strong and unflinching once more. "The second opinion changed everything. It was riskier than they thought—would've died if we hadn't acted."

I squeeze her hand, a shared comfort and admiration swirling in the confines of the limo. Lucky doesn't even begin to cover it. "Pearl, that's... you're incredible. You must have been so scared."

"I was," she admits. "But still, I got lucky. It meant dropping out of high school though, which was... rough." She shrugs, but I can sense the weight of those words, how they must've clung to her like a too-tight garment. "I did get my GED recently, and I'd like to go to college. For art," she adds, eyes gleaming with a passion that rivals the city lights outside.

I find myself caught in the tide of her spirit, admiration mingling with the attraction that's been only growing since we met. "You'll excel," I say with certainty. "Your art will reflect your story—unique and compelling.
